ORC Club certificate for Silverminken

Hello all. The Norwegian rating system has now changed from a mixture of theoretical and empirical (the LYS-system) to using the "offshore" time-on-time handicap from standard ORC Club certificates. This will take some time to get right, not least because the ORC certificates for most of the boats are "conversions" from registered boat data from the old system. Some of which is obviously wrong, and therefore brings those errors over to the ORC rating.

But anyway, I thought I'd share with you the data from Silverminkens certificate (also, you can ofcourse download the certificate for free from orc.org using a free registration if you are not already registered. Just search for the certificate and you should be able to find and download it).

The GPH for Silverminken is 652.8. Basically, this indicates seconds/mile, so a lower rating means a faster boat. As far as I can tell, Silverminkens rating indicates that it is theoretically the fastest of all the 310s that have ORC certificates that I could find on orc.org. I haven't really studied the details as to why, but it is clear that the size of the assy differs between the boats as well as using asymmetrical versus symmetrical kites. Also the weight varies somewhat. I'll see if I have time to do some more studies, but the data is out there.

The Norwegian rating uses the "offshore" time-on-time single number rating as its new official handicap, and (as of yesterday) Silverminken has a rating of 0.9558.

Other interesting facts:

  • Displacement: 4.083 kg
  • Draft: 1.916 m
  • Wetted area: 20.86 m2
  • Mainsail: 30.26 m2
  • Jib: 23.15 m2
  • Assy: 84.91 m2
  • J: 3.580 m
  • SPL: 4.30 m
  • TPS: 4.530 m
At least it will be much easier to compare with other boats now that the rating system is based on non-empirical measurements and prediction models. As to how correct this ends up (and ultimately, how fair) well, that remains to be seen.

Happy sailing!
